Making Horse sense at Green Pastures
Since we initially discovered the wonderful old farmland that we named Green Pastures it has been a personal dream of mine to share my love of horses with others - young and old! However, having neither the knowledge or the experience to start an equine venture of my own, this has remained a dream - undefined and wishlike!
And then one day the stars aligned and my personal goal intersected with that of Christi Costigan! Christi is a a ‘horse whisperer of another color’ - she has learned how to communicate with the equine population and translate this back to the language of humans!
Christi has moved into the ‘Green Cottage’ at Green Pastures - she plans to guide students - young and old - providing both guidance and direction as the world of horses is shared.
Check out the program on www.equinelogic.org.
We look forward to welcoming you to our special world at Green Pastures - with Christi as your guide.

Requiem for a ‘Fallen Filly’
You came into our life in early May,
A short two years ago,
And stole our hearts immediately
And would not let them go
As months went by you grew into
The mare we knew you’d be
Fulfilling promise at your birth
That you were wild and free
And then one sunny winter’s day
When Spring seemed in the air
Your ran and jumped, only to fall
Somehow it seems unfair
As your were born, so did you pass
With friends and those you love
So gallop now, my lovely mare
Forever - up above,

Loss of a beautiful soul
It is with sadness that I have to report that we have lost one of our wonderful horses. Cinco, the youngest of our herd, just a couple of months shy of her 2nd birthday on 5th of May - Cinco de Mayo - suffered a freak accident that took her from us.
She and Aurora were enjoying the incredible weather in the middle of January and decided to race up from the pond to the adjoining farm. This is something that they have done numerous times, always veering off as they approach the fencing at the top of the hill. This time around for some reason Cinco decided to try and jump the fence - but did not quite clear it and fell on the other side. Although she appeared fine after the fall the following day she had some trouble getting to her feet and we called Elaine, our vet. Sadly it turned out to be something serious and Cinco has now left us for the big pasture in the sky.
We have a memorial for our little filly under the 300 year old oak tree where we have benches and I have sat there several times since. Somehow I know that she is still with us in spirit - in fact the other night I saw a shooting star that I know was her letting me know that she is out there, having fun.

Over the years we have been fortunate in that out horse population has grown organically - basically what I mean is that we have witnessed the birth and growth of 4 of our wonderful animals.
The first was Chipper - our opinionated Gelding. His mother, Calypso, was a very dark bay Thoroughbred - while his father, was a beautiful Appaloosa stallion - Chip. The result is Chipper - now 5 years old he has morphed over the years and is now a beautiful roan.
The second, Mistic, is the result of a love affair between her mother, Misladdin, an arabian queen, and Chip - yes - Chipper and Mistic share a father! Mistic is a wonderful mare, sharing the best qualities of both her parents.
Then we welcomed Aurora - She is the daughter of Galaxy and a lovely Appaoosa stallion - not Chip this time around. Aurora has some issues with her hocks over the years but as a 3 year old we are thrilled with her progress. Kate, one of our community members, decided to put a saddle and bridle on her on early June - surprise, surprise, she did not even flinch - even though noone had spent any time training her.
Then there is Cinco - the latest in our herd. She is the daughter of Galaxy - and our favorite stallion - Chip! She is a beautiful filly - flaxen mane and a chestnut coat - until like all Appaloosa horses - she will probably surprise us all and change color completely.
So there we have our ‘Family members’.
Other equine residents include Suzy - laid back quarterhorse mare, Ginger - a tempestuous redhead - or chestnut if you prefer - Bombay - lively thoroughbred - and last but not least - Prestys - gorgeous warmblood gelding.

Green Pastures - views across seasons

Front lawn at Deerhaven
Hello world!
This is a wonderful place where time stands still!
Green Pastures is the remant of a centuries old tobacco farm - and home to a family of horses who share their pastures with woodland creatures who have called this place their own for generations.
Our objective is to feed the body and the soul of the horse riding community who choose to board their own animals with us, to lease one of our horses, or merely to hone their equestrian skills at a transactional level.
